As the opening scene of Pride and Prejudice flashed across the television screen, the microwave dinged.
“Oh, popcorn’s ready!” Nick said excitedly as he fairly bolted from the couch.
“Hey, come back here! You’re going to miss the beginning,” his girlfriend called.
Moments later Nick came back in with a heaping bowl of popcorn, popping several pieces into his mouth.
“Babe, you can’t expect me to watch this without popcorn.” He batted his girlfriend’s legs out of his seat and flopped onto the couch, spilling several pieces in the process. He quickly collected them and shoved each one into his mouth as she glared at him.
“Hey, I cleaned it up.” As she continued to glare, Nick dropped his eyes, and his lower lip jutted out slightly. The scolded puppy look always worked.
"Don't even try that. Just sit and behave. And give me some." She took the bowl from his hands and settled into her pillow. Nick just giggled and grabbed a handful, trying not to crunch too loudly.
When the popcorn was gone, Nick set the bowl on the side table and took the opportunity to sneak an arm around his girl's shoulders, leaning in a bit. He was rewarded when she put her head on his shoulder, long hair brushing his lips.
As the end credits rolled, neither one moved. When Nick looked down, her eyes were closed and she was breathing evenly, fast asleep. He smiled to himself and yawned into his free hand, glad that it was a Friday night and they could both sleep in tomorrow. He grabbed a blanket from the back of the couch and spread it over both of them, before wrapping his arms around her and following her into sleep.
