Justin tapped his pencil against the table, raising his eyes until he was looking at Lance. “Don’t you think it sucks that we’re stuck here studying and they’re out partying?”
Lance answered without looking up from his textbook. “They’re older. They’ve been through this already.”
“I’m tired of them being older.”
Lance couldn’t help but crack a grin and look up at Justin. “Get used to it.”
“I mean, I’m as mature as they are. The drinking age here is sixteen. I’d just like to be out there doing something more interesting than studying once in a while.”
“When you’re older and educated, you’ll be glad that you aren’t older and not educated.”
“You don’t think we’ll be in the band for long do you?”
“I think it’s good to have an education and not rely on show business.”
Leaning across the table, Justin reached out and began tracing his index finger around Lance’s lips. “I think there are other things that are just as important to experience as education. Let’s take a break for a few.”
After slipping a bookmark into his textbook, Lance followed Justin over to the beds. As he was about to flop onto his own bed, Justin scooted over and patted the mattress beside him. “I want to talk.”
Lance climbed into the bed beside Justin, their legs touching as he looked into Justin’s eyes. “Talk about what?”
“Girls, kissing, sex.”
“If you keep that up, your mom will be here in a second. She just seems to know when you’re about to go somewhere you shouldn’t.”
“Why? It’s natural curiosity. Have you ever kissed a girl?”
Lance gazed into Justin’s eyes. The boy was truly interested. Lance had to look away as he replied. “Just on the cheek.”
“Not like relatives. I meant like girlfriends.”
“Yeah. I took girls on dates and kissed them goodnight on the cheek.”
Quickly overcome with laughter, Justin rolled onto his back, wiping the tears from his eyes. A minute later, he rolled back onto his stomach and faced Lance. “Wow. You stud you!”
“Yeah? I supposed you’ve done more.”
“I’ve at least kissed a girl on the mouth.”
“Maybe I’m not interested in girls,” sputtered Lance, closing his eyes and hanging his head when he realized what he’d said.
Justin stopped laughing and reached out, laying his hand on Lance’s shoulder. “Not interested as in, not right now, or not interested as in, you prefer boys?”
“I don’t know. I mean, how do you know?”
“Have you ever kissed a boy?”
“In Mississippi? Are you crazy? I would have been chased out of the state.”
“Are you curious?”
“About kissing?”
“About kissing a boy.”
“Why?” “You can kiss me. We could, you know, practice. Then it won’t be so awkward when we’re out with people for real.”
“Your mom would kill me!”
“No she wouldn’t. She’s already told me she’d be cool if I’m gay.”
“I can’t believe you talk to your mom about that stuff. My mom would go ballistic.”
“How do you know?”
“Because she’s from Mississippi and being gay is considered wrong down there. They think all gays will burn in hell. And I’m still her innocent baby boy. I always will be.”
“You won’t ever know what she really thinks unless you talk to her about it. In the meantime, kiss me, you fool.” Sitting up on the bed, Justin tossed his head back, closed his eyes and puckered his lips.
“You are insane.”
“Oh come on, Lance. We should practice. People are going to expect us to experiment and stuff. Just kiss me.”
Lance’s breathing became short and shallow as he sidled closer to Justin. Taking his time, he leaned ever closer until their lips barely brushed against each other, then he scrambled back quickly, while Justin blinked his eyes open.
“What was that?” asked Justin.
“A kiss,” insisted Lance.
“You’re never going to keep a girlfriend or a boyfriend if that’s the best you can do. Come here.”
Once again, Justin patted the mattress beside him, encouraging Lance to sit close. This time Justin took the lead by wrapping his arms around Lance and holding him close. “Relax,” he urged.
Lance held himself steady as Justin cocked his head and pressed his lips hard against Lance’s. After they separated for a moment, Justin came close again, pushing harder this time and opening his mouth as he pressed his tongue between Lance’s lips, against his teeth.
They were both breathless as they separated, staring into each other’s eyes as their hearts raced with excitement.
“Try opening your mouth. Don’t you watch how they kiss in the movies?”
“My parents, they don’t kiss like that.”
“Mine do. And if you don’t try it, how do you know whether you’ll like it or not? Let’s get more comfortable,” suggested Justin as he pulled the pair onto the mattress, rolling Lance onto his back.
“If one of our moms come in, they’re going to kill us!”
Cupping Lance’s chin in his hand, Justin smiled. “You worry too much.”
Sprawled across Lance, Justin instigated another kiss and this time Lance opened his mouth, his eyes tightly shut as he felt his tongue against Justin’s for the first time. Justin deftly unbuttoned Lance’s shirt and rubbed his hand across Lance’s bared chest. Lance squirmed underneath Justin until the kiss was broken and they were both panting.
“If our moms come in, they’re going to think we’re having sex,” said Lance as he struggled to sit up.
“It’s not sex unless it involves your dick.”
“Who told you that?”
“Chris.”
“Of course it was.”
Placing his hand on Lance’s crotch, Justin smiled widely. “I was going to ask how you liked it, but it looks like you did. Maybe you are gay after all. I bet you didn’t get hard after kissing a girl on the cheek.”
Lance shook his head as he rolled his eyes and looked up at the ceiling. He wished he had Justin’s confidence.
Leaning over Lance, Justin pursued another kiss just as they heard the doorknob rattle and twist. Justin hopped from the bed as Lance scrambled to button up his shirt as the door opened.
