Jessie sighed, but went along with it, even when Lance handed him a gun belt and a red bandana. Lance used spare wire he had brought to patch the fence, then they rode off, side by side.
“We going to ride off into the sunset or what?” Jessie asked.
Lance nodded at the bandana Jessie had shoved into his pocket. “Tie that across you face, like a bandit. It’ll keep the dust off you.”
Jessie did as he was asked and followed Lance to a small picnic area at the side of the two-lane highway. Lance scouted the area, then tied the horses to a tree and pulled Jessie into the bushes, out of sight. Once there, they settled into each other’s arms and kissed again.
“Damn Lance, your heart is racing. Excited much?”
“With you, baby? Always. You should feel how hard I am.”
“Are you offering or demanding?”
Before Lance replied, he placed a hand over Jessie’s mouth as a car pulled up. They watched as the family set up their picnic. Eventually, the two girls wandered over to pet the horses. Lance pushed his bandana back onto his face, as well as Jessie’s, then pulled Jessie out of the bushes. Jessie’s eyes widened as he watched Lance grab one of the little girls, tossing her into Jessie’s arms. Lance drew his gun and headed over to the parents.
Jessie listened as Lance attempted to raise the pitch of his voice. “We ain’t gonna hurt ya’ll. All I want is your money. Don’t need your whole wallet, just take out your money and hand it over, then we’ll leave.”
Jessie stood frozen, his hands on the girl’s shoulders as they watched her father sweat nervously, pulling out his cash. Lance nodded to the woman and told her to get her purse, but not to try anything funny. As soon as Lance had the cash, he shoved it into his pockets and ran back to Jessie. Before he let the little girl go, Lance raised his gun and shot the rear tire of the family’s car. A moment later, they were back on the horses, galloping away. Minutes later, they had placed the horses back into their pasture, closed the patch on the fence and hauled their butts out of there.
“Why did you do that?” Jessie asked as they headed back to their hotel.
“Baby, I told you, I want to try everything at least once. Has it escaped you that together we’re like Jesse James? You know, the outlaw? And damn Jessie, sex with a wanted man sounds pretty damn hot.”
“Is that the next thing on your list of things to do?”
“Oh yes!” Lance replied as he pushed the accelerator a little harder, his hand finding its way to Jessie’s leg.
