Just got back from a fab weekend away, which included the chance to go riding. Therefore wishing for SDB's and horses - with our without SDB romance, your call. Thank you!

Morning Light (part one)

It’s his vacation and he’s supposed to be relaxing, but Lance finds his eyes blinking open. The room is pitch-black the way he likes it, but he knows something isn’t right. He has a sixth sense about things. After blinking his eyes once more, he’s able to focus on his clock. The bright red numbers assure him it’s only half past four. Rolling over, he tosses his arm across the bed, only to find himself alone.

“Chris? Chris? Where are you?” he asks.

When he finds no response to his question, he rolls his eyes and sits up on the bed. Moving to the window, he pulls the drapes back and finds it’s still dark outside as well. The moon shines bright and full though, surrounded by countless stars. Smiling, Lance wants to make a wish, but he can’t think of anything lacking in his life.

Childhood memories flood back to him and he can’t look into the stars and not make a wish, so he hastily wishes he knew where Chris was. The answer manifests itself only moments later. There are lights on in the barn and Lance knows they were off when he went to bed.

Barely taking the time to shake his head, he feels his way to the dresser, cursing when he stubs his toe on the bedpost.

When he reaches the barn, Chris isn’t there. Neither is his favorite horse, the big bay with a star, Jack. A soft nicker calls to him and he looks around for the box of sugar cubes. The chestnut mare he’s been riding all week nuzzles his palm as she accepts the sugar cubes from him. Lance smiles, remembering Chris telling him her name is Emmy and she was the perfect mount for *Mr Hollywood*. His smile broadens when he finds a scribbled note tacked to her stall. It’s in Chris’ handwriting. The message is simple, “Hurry up Bass!”

Lance saddles the mare quickly, then swings onto her back. “Let’s go find them,” he urges as he nudges her into motion. As he rides out of the barn, Lance sees a gate open and heads toward it. In the light of the moon, he can see Chris and the bay gelding walking on a path a short distance away. As he pushes Emmy into a canter, he sees Chris turn to watch him, yet he doesn’t stop the bay until he reaches the top of the next hill.

Emmy whinnies and snorts as she comes up on Jack. The bay turns to watch her, then stomps his hoof a couple times before shaking his head. Sitting atop the tall gelding, Chris has dropped his reins, his arms folded in the coolness of the night.

“Why are you out here?” Lance asks when he’s close enough to be heard.

Turning, Chris looks Lance up and down before he answers. “I wanted to show you something.”

Lance’s trademark smile lights up his face. “Yeah?”

“Sure. Come on.”

Unable to hide his disappointment on having to wait, he urges Emmy forward. At first she’s following Jack, but Lance keeps pushing her to go faster until the horses are side by side. Lance reaches for Chris’ hand, then pulls the pair together, leaning over to kiss Chris briefly.

“I didn’t want to wait until we got to wherever we’re going,” he explains.

Not liking the close proximity, Jack nips at Emmy, warning the mare to keep her distance. Her ears flatten back, but Lance lets go of Chris and reins Emmy over a couple feet before she can nip back. Without another word spoken, Chris pushes Jack into a canter, turning back in the saddle long enough to make sure Lance is following.

When Lance finally catches up, he sees Jack’s lead rope tied to a tree and quickly dismounts and ties Emmy nearby. Chris is standing on a hilltop staring into space.

“This is what you wanted to show me? The night sky?”

“Look.”

“At what?”

“Come here and look!”

Lance walks to where Chris is standing and tries to follow his line of vision. He can see the trees, the distant full moon, the fading stars and the sky just beginning to change. It’ll be daylight soon. “I’m going into space one day,” Lance announces, just to fill the silence.

Walking up behind the blond, Chris captures him in a hug, pressing his cheek against Lance’s shoulder. “I know you will.”

“And when I get back, I’ll have a hundred endorsements and the money will roll in. I’ll buy you anything you want. Anything.”

They’re still standing, Chris embracing Lance from behind, as the sun rises. A wispy fog plays through the trees, but they watch as the sun comes up and shines brightly, warming the land.

Standing on his tiptoes, Chris leans over Lance’s shoulder and kisses him. “You can’t buy this. You can’t buy a rainbow or a sunny day. And you can’t buy happiness.”

“I thought you were going to say you can’t buy love.”

Grinning widely, Chris presses his head into Lance’s neck, his arms tightening around Lance’s waist. “I don’t have to.”

Thanks! I think Chris is all warm fuzzies on the inside (& he doesn't hide it as well as he thinks he does!).
