I've been saving this round-up, because obviously at this time of year we're all busy with SeSa stories and, um, oh yes, Christmas. But this community has been very interesting and useful for me, as a newcomer this year to the wonderful world of Popslash - it has been the source of inspiration for a good many, perhaps even the majority, of the fics I've written, as well as a delightful source of ficcy goodness. Anyway, I'd be sorry to see the place fall into a decline due to a probably temporary lapse. So as
ephemera_pop has suggested, I'd like to offer a personal recap of the most memorable things I've found here. You may be glad to be reminded of some of these stories! The list is necessarily incomplete, as there have been plenty more fics I've enjoyed, but one cannot go on for ever. Perhaps some other community members will be inspired to list your own Most Memorables.
Turns out there are basically three categories: stories memorable on their own, stories which grew, and amusement value.
I have to start with 'amusement value' because that's how I made my own entry into the community: back in June,
grapekitten wanted a fic in which Lance is pregnant, due to being raped, and Justin tries to make Lance see that even though he didn't father it. . . He's still the Daddy. I don't think what I wrote was in quite the style the requester had in mind, in fact in retrospect maybe it was kinda mean, but I did enjoy writing it...
And then there was fun to be had with Tails: I posted a request for Tail stories, and got funny, cute ones from
forceofisis and
etsu_88, and a serious, sensual one from
ephemera_pop.
In that same week,
ephemera_pop asked for My Little Pony crossovers. Such silly, silly fun.
And who could forget Lance's enormous duck?
This is a great place to post off-the-wall crackfic, but there are plenty of times when a request gets answered by a more serious piece that's well worth remembering. I went back through the earlier posts, when I joined, and very much enjoyed several stories posted in the first three months of the community's existence. There was a very hot Trickyfish by
patchworkdragon; C-Bass fluff from
etsu_88; another hot and funny fic by
patchworkdragon, this time Kevin/Lance; a delightful story by
ephemera_pop showing Lance as a practical and romantic boyfriend for Howie; and another by the same author featuring Lance and AJ in an AU library, which anyone with a book kink (all of us, yeah?) must enjoy. Oh, and according to
ephemera_pop, May was the Marvelous Month of Masturbation (funny, it's not mentioned in my diary), and there was a fabulous Chris fic on that very subject from
llumi.
Moving on through the year, my own request for 'Lance didn't think he was in love with Chris' was answered beautifully by
msktrnanny; another of my requests (Nsync/Greek gods) inspired
ephemera_pop to produce a really beautiful, textured story. Still no Chris/Rick, though. Pout.
As a writer, I find that requests with a little something that's unusual about them are more likely than more general requests to set me writing (your mileage may well vary, of course). I picked up a request from
raineesue for Trickyfish and the giant space bulls, and another from
ssecca01 for 'snark, coffee and underwear', both of which were great fun to write. So I commend them for the inspiration, and also
ephemera_pop, who makes really interesting requests; she also writes really interesting fics, for example, this one, in which Lance has an eating disorder.
It has also been noticeable that this community has provided the trigger for some really interesting fics that have grown beyond the original response - and aren't we all grateful for that! A request for geekiness brought out a fabulous AU from
joyfulseeker with the boys in a chemistry lab. A delicious piece of wing/horn/tail fic from
turps33 has grown beyond its first incarnation, quite right too. And memorable for me was the request from
ssecca01 for a fantasy AU, because I wrote a ficlet on impulse, then signed up for
fanfic100 and found myself adding to that little story - there are now nine in the series, and more to come.
So thank you,
fic_requests, for providing me with much material to read, and many inspirations to write. See you in the new year.
