Howie took the two bags from; he brought one bag to eye level to check the logo, Target that Nick handed him. “Do I want to know?”
Nick turned around from where he was hauling a large bag out and gave Howie a swift kiss. “Well. The rest is already in the garage. The boxes came earlier.”
Howie looked past the rear of Nick’s truck and into the garage where one very tall box stood next to a shorter but fatter box. “Maybe I don’t want to know. You just get home?”
There was a thud as Nick hipped the door shut, the remaining bags hanging from his big hands. “Nah. I got the stuff we had set up then got this stuff,” he indicated the mystery items by holding up his own bags, “but Brian called and I got distracted.”
“You two act like you never see each other. You’re like two middle school girls.” Howie smiled in answer to Nick, who stuck out his tongue at the comment. “I need to shower. You eat?”
“Nah, too busy talking about who’s cuter you or Leighanne and giggling,” Nick told him.
“Me, of course. Leighanne’s a girl. She has cooties. I’ll cook while you, uh, Nick?”
Nick looked up from where he was poking in bags. “Hmm?”
“What exactly do you need to do with that?”
“Oh, assemble it. Then fill it. Shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours,” Nick moved to curl and arm around Howie’s waist.
Howie rolled his eyes. “I’ll leave you to it. Call you when dinner’s ready?”
Nick nodded. Howie turned his face up for a kiss before heading off to shower.
When Howie called him for dinner Nick came in straight away, even washing up without being reminded. The meal was enjoyable and they loaded the dishwasher just as the sun began its descent.
“Come out back, I want to show you.” Nick led Howie by the hand to the backyard. There, surrounded by the remnants of the boxes that had been in the garage and still filling with water, was a small squat pool. Nick waved a hand in its direction and said. “Tada!”
“Um, Nick. That’s really great and I’m impressed you did it all by yourself, but. And I say this with love. We already have a pool.” He jerked his thumb over his shoulder, indicating the large natural style pool complete with waterfall and slide. “Why do we need this, though lovely, rather small one?” Nick stuck his tongue out again. He was overly fond of doing that. After sticking his hand in his back pocket, he handed Howie a crumpled page from what looked like a catalog.
“Yippy Skippy Swim Pool for Pets?” There was a sense of something creeping into Howie’s mind. Something not necessarily good. He looked closer at the page. On it was a picture of the pool, much as it looked in front of him, good for Nick. There were also three close ups of the pool filled and being enjoyed by various pets; koi fish, some very yellow canaries, and one huge very scary looking snake. “Nick. Tell me you didn’t. Lie to me if you have to, but tell me you didn’t.”
Nick smiled, sunshine in a face, “I didn’t.”
Howie exhaled slowly. Thank God. Wait. He had told Nick to lie to him. “Nick, did you really not do it or did you say you didn’t do it because I told you to lie to me if you had to?”
Nicks laughter was loud and only slightly reassuring. Howie watched as Nick walked to the door that led to their guest suite and opened the door. Across the lawn came two chocolate brown cocker spaniels, ears flying behind them. They jumped at Howie’s legs licking and scratching in their enthusiasm to get closer to him. He bent to scoop one of them up and was tilted off balance when the other jumped into his arms. A lean one way, flail the other and a small scream and Howie and the dogs were in the pool.
Nick came over and kneeled next to the pool and its occupants, two of whom were now happily swimming around. “You know, Howard, we have a perfectly respectable human pool, right over there.” Nick pointed.
Howie looked at Nick’s smile, the new dogs he had no idea were coming and down at his own sopping clothes and grabbed Nick’s shirt to pull him in for a kiss.
hee - this is lovely! The line “Nick, did you really not do it or did you say you didn’t do it because I told you to lie to me if you had to?” especially just made me grin.
Wheeeee, this was so much fun and so cute!! And just like Ephemera I started to giggle happily at “Nick. Tell me you didn’t. Lie to me if you have to, but tell me you didn’t.”

And a swim.
