I don't know if it's fair asking for a story when you don't write yourself, but since the promo pics for Never Gone was released last year I've been longing for someone to write hitmen!Backstreet and no one has. So, want someone please write me a little something inspired by those pictures? (Inspiritational pictures can be found here.)

Just to reassure you that you are *absolutly* allowed to make requests, whether you write or not. Requests = good :D

I haven't written purely Boys for years, so....eeep.

Hope this suits.

~*~*~*~

Kevin suit is sharp, crisp edges and perfectly straight seems. His holster is hidden, made to measure leather, moulded with age and use, it straps across his chest, gun tucked securely inside. He can draw his gun in seconds; can hit a target dead on. It’s what he does. He’s paid to be the best, he is the best.

The others are in the next room. Kevin can hear them, too loud laughter and the creak of chairs. He’ll join them soon, a terse word and they’ll scatter, shadows in the night.

Now though, now he waits.

He leans against the wall, ankles crossed, eyes half lidded. His gun digs into his side, and he shifts slightly, then stills again. Hyper aware, he listens, walks through the job in his mind. A simple hit, one mark, and an envelope of cash to match the one they’ve got already.

Kevin never thinks of the victim. When he shoots, when bullets smash through flesh, they become an it, nothing more.

It’s something AJ’s never learned. He blots out the faces with alcohol, his blood stained hands holding glasses of brandy, of wine, anything that helps him forget. His shakes constantly now, tiny tremors, and Kevin’s waiting for the day he’ll self implode.

There’s nothing he can do to help. This is AJ’s life, his choice. All Kevin can do is keep watching, ensure AJ keeps living, doesn’t take his own gun and blow himself away. That’s Kevin’s greatest fear, because AJ can never be an it.

“We’re ready.” Howie’s standing in the doorway. His hair is pulled back tight, and his eyes are shadowed. Evidence of nights spent researching this latest mark. He knows all about her. Has become her, and Kevin knows Howie could answer any question, could easily slip into her life. It makes him distant at times, straddling two lives and living neither one. Kevin nods, and Howie slips back into the room.

There’s laughter then, and Kevin imagines Brian, feet up on the old coffee table, gun laid casually on his lap. Brian hates holsters; instead he jams his gun between pants and thigh. He says he likes the feel of metal against his skin, Kevin believes him. Brian’s one of the friendliest guys Kevin knows, and he loves him deeply, but there’s something in his eyes. That spark that shows he’s truly a member of their criminal family.

That leaves one. Nick’s young still, the new guy on probation. There used to be innocence in his eyes, but a river of blood and fear has carried that away. Now his smiles are frayed around the edges, and Kevin regrets not sending him away. But Nick refused, more afraid of home than the world he inhabits now.

If Nick lives he’ll be one of the best, a master forger, accepted in any gang. It’s a big if. The learning curve for this business is steep, and Nick is still careless at times, drawing attention their way with a misplaced step or word.

Kevin itches his arm, fingers pressing over the hidden bandage. Nick will learn, he has to, because Kevin’s not willing to lose him too.

The phone rings, and Kevin unfolds himself from the wall. He pats his gun and mentally says a prayer, looks up to meet the eyes of the others.

It’s time to go.

I'm so relieved you like it! It's been so long since I've written Backstreet that I was worried I couldn't pull it off. But I was looking through the requests, saw yours, and had to try.

I can totally see Kevin as the leader, distant because he has to be. But get past that outer shell and he's a different man. I doubt he'll lose Nick or AJ. They'll go through hard times for sure, but they're strong.

You should write more Backstreet, more Kevin!

I'll think about it ;)

Wow, Ter, I totally second Turlough, here. Amazing work!

And let me take the moment to say that it all fits, superbly. My espionage/criminology studies only show slightly in my S!s stories, not really in all the other superhero/fantasy stuff I write, but I've been focused on such things even longer than martial arts, over two-thirds of my life. -This? Works very, very well from that perspective. You leave the specific details of exactly what they do vague, which simply means anyone with any actual knowledge fills them in subconsciously and that makes the story all the more effective. The personalities, the mental standpoints? Are blow-the-reader-away AWESOME. You really hit this one on the head, bravo!

Man, I swear, LJ drives me insane sometimes.

So sorry for the late reply to such a lovely comment.

I'm so glad it worked for you. I know that you know your stuff, so if you say it works, I know it does.

Thank you!

Excellent, very chilling. I love the way you present their personalities - the descriptions all bring to mind pictures of Backstreet Boys, but they really work as members of *this* group too.

I'm glad the ficlet came across okay because I really was worried. It's been years since I wrote them last.

because Frank has been eating pot, not just smoking crack.

But very spooky. I got the email from you for the reply, just as someone mentioned your name in chat.
