~*~*~*~
When Chris was young it was his job to watch his sisters overnight. He’d sit in a pool of dim light, a blanket tucked around his legs and school books piled at his side. Sleepy gurgles were his background noise, and he’d rub at his eyes, swapping books for bottles that he’d guide into hungry mouths. Wiping spilt milk from downy skin with the back of his work-roughened hands.
Baby tucked in the crook of his arm; he’d look outside, searching for lights in the darkness. The houses with bright windows, evidence that others were up late too, that despite what it felt like, he really wasn’t the only one awake.
It’s different now.
He’s always warm, always fed, any money worries long gone. Yet in some ways it feels the same.
Tucking Bailey securely against his arm, he wanders to the nearest window. Outside the darkness is studded with lights, strings of them in the trees, striped candy-canes lit up on the neighbours lawn, pushing back the night. But it’s not the darkness Chris fears, it’s the stillness, the silence that allows his doubts to run free.
Rubbing at his eyes with his hand, he yawns, needing sleep. Bailey looks up at him, eyes dark and wide, his fingers tiny against Chris’ arm.
“Hey.” JC’s dressed in one of Chris’ t-shirts and old sweat pants that lie low on one narrow hip. Pushing back his tangled hair, he walks close, resting his hand against Chris’ back. “You should have woken me.”
“You’ve got an interview first thing,” Chris says simply, eyes closing as he rests his head against JC’s shoulder.
“Still would’ve taken a feed.” JC moves his hand, wrapping his fingers around Chris’ wrist. “Come on.”
Tugging gently, he steers them all toward the master bedroom. Chris follows; blinking when they step into the brightness of the hall, then presses a kiss against Bailey’s head before handing him over to JC.
The bed is warm still, covers crumpled and pushed into a heap. Kicking at them, Chris lies down, curling onto his side so he can watch JC. The way he smiles at Bailey, his expression one of love as he kisses their son’s cheek.
JC settles into bed, back against the headboard, knees up, singing softly with Bailey cradled against his chest.
Finally Chris can sleep.

"Kitty!"
A sigh, "no, not kitty. Lance."
A pout, a scowl, "Kitty!"
"Lance."
"Kitty!"
"Lance. Ll-ance. C'mon Nina, I know you can say it. Lance."
Nina turns her big brown eyes away from her Uncle Lance and looks over to her Daddy, the expression on her small face says clearly that she thinks her beloved Uncle has lost his mind. "Daddy? Sleep now?"
Chris scoops his daughter up into his arms, "you want to take a nap now? I thought you wanted to play."
She lays her head on his shoulder, "Bored."
"Dude, you bored my child so much she wants to take a nap."
Lance scowls, "I did not, I was trying to get her to say my name. You weren't helping any either, sitting there laughing. Where's JC, he'll help me."
"What will I help you with?" JC asks as he walks into the room.
Lance points at Nina who is squirming in her Daddy's arms trying to get herself turned towards her Poppa's voice. "She keeps calling me kitty, I was trying to get her to say Lance and she just won't do it. Chris thinks it's funny."
JC stops walking and stares at his friend, "You're kidding right?"
"Nina, who am I?" Lance asks the child.
"Kitty!" She quickly responds.
"See!" Lance exclaims, "Your kid keeps calling me kitty."
JC is holding his sides, tears leaking from his eyes and silently laughing. The expression on Lance's face is so serious and Nina obviously has no intention of letting anyone correct her. JC had been afraid of this, he'd even mentioned it to Chris, but Chris had assured him that Nina knew the difference. Apparently not.
"Nina, want to come with Poppa to show your Uncle what you got for your birthday?" JC asks, taking the child from Chris' arms as she nods. "Tell him to c'mon then."
Nina looks over JC's shoulder at Lance and clearly says, "C'mon kitty. Come see."
Lance can't help but look to Chris for help. Chris only shakes his head and gives Lance a push towards where JC is retreating from the room.
JC leads Lance through most of the house until they reach the room that at one time used to be JC's home office. Nina demands to be put down and so JC sets her down on her feet. She quickly runs over to Lance and takes him by the hand. "You have to be very quiet. Him is probably sleeping." She tells Lance in a whisper as she pulls him across the room.
There's a wicker basket in the corner, Lance notices that there's a couple towels hanging over the edge. As he looks closer he sees what Nina is trying to show him. A small beige and white kitten is curled up in the basket asleep. Lance crouches down to get a closer look and Nina smiles at him.
"See! It's mine. Granny gave it to me." She tells Lance.
"Ask her what her Granny gave her." JC calls from across the room.
"What is it, Nina?" Lance asks, suddenly afraid to hear the answer.
Nina smiles once more at him. "It's Lance!"
.... the end...
