JC wrung the paper towel out under the faucet once more before he crossed the room and began to wipe at the smear of spaghettios that was rapidly drying on the front of the refrigerator door. It constantly amazed him that such small children possessed such uncanny aim. Refrigerator clean, JC turned to put the paper towel into the trash when he spotted the handprint on the front of one of the cabinets. Another dampened paper towel and a little bit of scrubbing and the handprint was gone also. That handprint though had appeared to be made of chocolate pudding and JC wracked his brain for the last time that he’d given the kids pudding and he knew that it’d been over a month ago. There was no way that handprint had been there that long. He suspected that Nick might know something about it though.
Lunch dishes done and the kitchen back in some sort of resemblance of order instead of chaos, JC decided to seek out Nick and the kids. He followed the sound of the Sesame Street and singing to the living room and that is where he found them. Nick sitting on the floor, his back against the coffee table and both legs stretched out before him. The twins were each sitting on top of one Nick’s thighs, watching the television before them with complete rapture. As JC watched from the doorway, Robby and JR, Joshua Roy, happily sang along with some counting song on the show then when the song was over they settled back to listen to Elmo discuss something of importance with Big Bird. He took note that the boys were no longer wearing the spaghettio stained shirts they’d had on during lunch, in fact as he walked closer to the trio he could see that they’d had their faces recently washed too. Something that usually entailed much screaming by the boys and begging by JC. He sat down on the floor next to Nick and reached out to ruffle Robby’s white blonde hair. “How’d you get them cleaned up so quick?” He asked Nick.
“They don’t fuss with me like they do with you.” Nick said, turning his head to kiss JC.
“Really? Why is that? You bribing them with chocolate pudding or something?” JC asked, raising one eyebrow. The mention of pudding got the attention of both of the twins; soon they were swarming off of Nick and onto JC, asking for pudding. Three sets of dark blue eyes studied JC intently and he found it just a bit unnerving. “I never said there was pudding, I was asking your Dad a question, ok boys?”
JR moved back from JC’s lap to Nick’s where he promptly asked Nick, “does that mean we still get ice cream after Daddy goes to take his nap later?”
The look that crossed Nick’s face at that moment made JC laugh out loud, Nick knew he was busted. JC had repeatedly tried to instill healthy eating habits in the kids and things like ice cream and pudding were suppose to be special treats or desserts, not snacks and definitely not bribes for being good. “How’d you know about the pudding?” Nick asked.
JC reached out to take Robby’s hand in his own larger one and turned it towards Nick. “There was a hand print about this size, made of chocolate pudding on one of the kitchen cabinets. You’re not as stealthy as you think if you can’t remember to destroy the evidence.”
Nick laughed out loud then, “I guess not. You mad?”
JC shook his head no, “not really, but you can’t keep bribing them for good behavior Nick. They need some rules in their lives.”
At that moment, on the television, Cookie Monster decided to break into the “C is for Cookies” song and the twins began to bounce on their fathers’ laps and sing along with it. With a smile on his face, a few moments later, JC joined in. Nick followed right along. When the song was over, they all quietly watched the show to the end, when JC moved to turn the television off after it was done, this action was met with groans from not only the boys but from Nick too. “Hey! Don’t turn that off yet.” Nick told him.
“Yeah Daddy, Clifford is next.” JR said, his 3-year-old face showing his frustration that his Daddy didn’t know that important fact.
“It’s a beautiful sunny day. Dad should take you outside and play or go for a walk. I’ll even get Karja’s stroller out and we’ll go with you.” JC suggested.
Robby sighed from his spot on Nick’s lap. “Daddy, we *always* watch Clifford.”
“Clifford now, swimming later.” JR said, nodding his head in agreement.
“We do usually watch Clifford together after lunch.” Nick told JC, “You’re usually busy with the baby or doing something else, otherwise I know you’d know this. And yes, before you ask, I told the boys that I’d take them swimming later. You can still join us if you want. I could handle seeing you all wet and in that strip of cloth you like to call your bathing suit.” Nick waggled his eyes at JC. “Plus Karja loves the water and you know that.”
JC smiled as he thought of his daughter who was currently laying down for her after lunch nap. She was definitely his child, from her tiny blonde streaked brown curls and blue-gray eyes to her love of napping. She hadn’t given JC any fuss at all when he’d taken her from the high chair, cleaned her up, changed her diaper and clothes before laying her down for a nap in her crib, heck she’d been asleep before JC had finished changing her.
The twins were more like Nick though, dark blue eyes and their hair was white blonde from all the time they spent outside with Nick. Even with all the sun block that Nick and JC would slather on the boys, they still had just a hint of tan to their skin; “sun kissed” had been how JC’s mother described it. JC wondered if the fact that they were Nick’s biologically and not his was the reason the boys were more outgoing and talkative, or if it was the fact that they were older than Karja, or that there was two of them. But whereas she was quiet, the twins were boisterous.
Nick was used to JC slipping off into his own thoughts, so he sat there watching the smile spread across JC’s face as his lover went through whatever thought had distracted him. The boys had taken full advantage of JC’s distraction and were now watching their beloved “Clifford” on the television, laughing together at the antics of the big red dog and his owner. Nick watched JC and waited for the moment that JC would blink a few times and come back from his thoughts. When he did, Nick leaned over and pressed a kiss to the corner of JC’s mouth, which the boys spotted and loudly denounced with a chorus of “Ew.” before they slid out of their parent’s reach. Nick ignored the boys and pulled JC closer for a better kiss. “So,” he asked, pulling away after a long kiss, “swimming sound good for you?”
JC smiled, “swimming with our family sounds like fun.” And he set back to watch television with his lover and their sons.
This was just what I needed, happy domestic stuff. Loved the reaction of JC when Nickgot busted. And twins! Hee, too cute. And a little baby on top of it.
