JC spurred his horse on. Thoughts swirled through his mind as he wondered what he would do if he didn’t find work soon. The mare was all he had, but he couldn’t sell her. A cowboy wasn’t much good without a horse. His stomach grumbled as he approached another ranch house. He’d run out of food two days earlier and hadn’t had any success hunting. This was the first ranch he’d come across today.

Pulling his horse to a stop, he wiped the sweat from his brow, then he took a drink from his canteen. Then another, until he emptied it. The ranch owner surely wouldn’t deny him enough water to fill his canteen. His eyes fell across the ranch sign which read: KIRKPATRICK. After taking a deep breath, he nudged his horse forward, intent on asking for a job.

He met with two men outside of the main house. There was a blond holding a horse and a brunette standing on the porch with his arms crossed.

“Howdy,” JC began, nodding his head in greeting. “My name’s JC. I’m looking for work. Could you fellas tell me who I need to speak to?”

Both men eyed him up and down, then the brunette spoke. “I’m Chris Kirkpatrick, the owner. I might be looking for another hand. I’ll tell you what, JC. My foreman Lance here was about to check the fence line. If you’re willing to go with him, I’ll let him decide if he wants you hired or not. Fair enough?”

JC nodded, but the blond turned back to Chris. “Don’t need no help.”

“Tough. We need another hand. He needs a job. I need him checked out. I say he goes with you.” After Lance remained quiet, Chris turned back to JC and pointed to a nearby building. “That’s the cook’s house. Go tell Joey you’re riding with Lance and he’ll set you up with some rations. At least you’ll get some food. You’re skinny as a rail, boy.”

JC thanked Chris, then nearly tripped over his own boots heading to the cook’s house. Minutes later, he returned to find Lance mounted and waiting for him. The blond just eyed him, shook his head, then started his horse off at a walk. JC followed.

Neither spoke for hours as JC trailed after Lance. When they stopped to mend fence, JC tried apologizing. “I’m sorry he stuck you with me.”

“Makes no difference.”

Lance had removed his shirt and JC admired his broad, tanned back and the way sweat trickled down it. JC moved closer to help hold the fence as Lance worked on it. He licked his lips as he tried to resist licking the sweat off of Lance’s neck. When Lance’s arm brushed against his, JC couldn’t stop from exclaiming, “Damn!”

Lance continued to work without missing a beat. “Bothers you to be touched?”

“No,” JC replied.

“Good. We work close together here. Real close. A lot.”

JC bit his lower lip, then noted, “I need a break as soon as you have this secured. I’m dying of thirst. I’m so thirsty I could lick the sweat off your back.”

“Go ahead.”

JC’s eyes widened, wondering if he was serious. Lance was still working with the fence, not even looking at him. After another minute of hesitation, JC closed the space between them. His arms were burning from holding the fence steady. When Lance didn’t back away, JC stuck his tongue out and lapped a long trail up Lance’s neck.

Lance didn’t lift his eyes. “That ain’t my back. Fence is shored up now, if you want to move.”

JC released the fence and it held. Moving around behind Lance, he licked slowly up Lance’s back. Then did it again. When Lance turned around, there was a broad smile on his face.

JC reached out, placing his hands on either side of Lance’s waist. “Still thirsty,” he whispered.

Lance stood still and nodded. JC smiled then began licking at Lance’s chest, sucking at the tender places that seemed to make Lance moan and gasp. When Lance began undoing his pants, JC dropped to his knees to help. Lance tossed JC’s hat aside and began running his hands through JC’s hair. JC’s breath was warm on Lance’s cock a moment before he took it into his mouth.

“Oh baby,” Lance moaned, “I think we can definitely use a man with your skills around here.”

I thought it was a really cool request and, since I love horses & westerns, I was also *waiting* for it to be filled. When I checked back the next day a story popped into my head, although the one I wound up writing is totally different. It probably turned out better this way, than what originally popped into my head. LOL

I'm glad you loved it. Ficlets deserve love, too! :)

Thanks for reading & for the comment!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think the ficlets are good for me, because I'm usually way too wordy, but they don't allow me to put all the *background stuff* in there.

So this is why the animosity between Lance & Chris exists, or the story before the story.

Lance decides to head west, seeking the wide open spaces and he meets up with Joey. They travel together for a bit and Lance gets a little overly attached to Joey. They mess around a little and to Lance, it's *love* and to Joey it's just *getting some*, but Joey truly does like Lance as a pal.

When they happen across Kirkpatrick's ranch, Chris offers Joey a job immediately. He needed a cook for his hands and himself and he likes boys with a little meat to them. He didn't want to hire Lance at all, but Joey said they were a team and Chris could hire both or neither of them. If he didn't want Lance, then Joey would be moving on, too. Chris hires them both. Joey moves into the main house and Lance makes due with a spot in the bunkhouse.

Over the next year or two, Joey stays involved with Chris, because Chris wants him, but he also uses that to his advantage in helping Lance. Lance fumes about it because he wants Joey, too, as more than a friend. Whenever Chris threatens to fire Lance over his attitude, Joey reminds him that he'll be leaving with Lance. Between Lance's skills and Joey's persistence, Lance is promoted to foreman when the old one dies or leaves.

So Chris and Lance have a very strained relationship because they both *want* Joey, but Chris is the one who *has* Joey.

Now when JC comes along and blows Lance, Lance sees it as a win/win situation. Either Chris will want him because he's new and such a beauty, which means Joey would be dumped back into Lance's waiting arms, or Lance gets JC, which really isn't a bad thing at all.

Since Chris likes boys with meat on them, he'll keep Joey, so Lance and JC become a hot little item and eventually get to build their own little cabin to share. :)
