It's probably cheating, but this is a fragment that will never go anywhere and it deserves to see the light of day.

When he got back from Russia, Lance kept his cell turned off, ignored his email, and let the machine take every call. Both Beth and his mother had strict instructions not to tell anyone where he was, not even the guys. He didn't need anyone's sympathy, or in the case of the guys, any righteous indignation on his behalf. He just needed to be here, in his house, with his pets. Getting used to being home, speaking English. Not going to space.
All the secrecy not withstanding, he was not really surprised when the knock on the door turned out to be Chris rather than the Thai food he was expecting.
He looked over Chris's shoulder at the RV blocking his driveway, and sighed. "What do you want?"
"Road trip. You have half an hour to pack a bag and call your mom."
"I've got pets, Chris. I can't just up and leave." Lance chose not to notice that he wasn't arguing the trip, just the timing.
"Bring 'em with. It's just Jackson and Dirk, right? I wouldn't ask you to leave your babies after you've been separated for so long."
And Lance knew he wouldn't, that Chris understood better than any of their bandmates. "Well then, get Dirk's travel cage out of the garage, and load some of their food in the RV while I pack."
"Woohoo!" Chris pumped his fist. "I've caught me a Bass!"
Lance waited until Chris was around the corner before he let himself smile.
