Justin checked his pockets one last time as he opened the door of his hotel room. Key card, phone, wallet, breath mints. Everything in it's place. He pulled the door shut behind him and had just turned towards the elevators when a shout made him turn around. Lance was backed up against the wall, his arm being twisted behind his back by none other than Kevin Richardson. They both looked furious, snarling in each other's faces. Justin started in their direction, trying to hear what Kevin was saying, and a door opened at the other end of the hall. All three men turned to watch as Nick Carter stepped out of his room and looked with shock at the two men against the wall. The distraction was just what Lance needed and he ripped his arm out of Kevin's hold. The two innocent bystanders watched warily as the combatants circled each other, their voices too low to understand what they said but their expressions making it clear that it wasn't pleasant. Something Lance said struck Kevin the wrong way, and he struck Lance. Across the face. That was enough for Justin to forget the whole "none of my business" theory, and he lunged for them, intending to pull Kevin off his friend. He vaguely knew that Carter was coming at them from the other side, but he could take Carter any day so he wasn't worried. There was a confusion of limbs, and someone's fist hit the side of his head and he had to stop for a minute, shaking his head to make his ears stop ringing. Kevin shouted something incomprehensible in Justin's ear and he took a step back to asses the situation. Lance and Kevin were at it full blast, grappling more than hitting, and Carter was inexplicably opening the nearest room door. It made a bit more sense when Nick yanked Kevin by the arm, pulling him into the room. Before he could get the door shut, Lance snatched the key card from his hand and dove through the door, slamming it shut. The silence was deafening, though that might have been the blow to the head. Or the shout in his ear. Justin looked at Nick. Nick looked at Justin. "Can you get another card for that room?" Justin asked him. "I don't know what the hell is wrong, but we can't let them kill each other." "Yeah, we need our basses. I think I can get one from our security, they're in the room by the elevator. You stay here and watch, ok?" "Yeah," Justin agreed, grateful for the excuse to just lean against the wall for a while. He tried to figure out what had happned; Lance and Kevin had always been able to piss each other off, but this was a bit over the top. Nick came back down the hall then. "Put a move on, Carter, I want my friend back in one piece." "I've seen the arms on that man lately, I'm a bit more worried about Kevin. He's getting old." "Looked to me like he was the one who started it," Justin lied, since he'd missed the start. "That's what's freaky," Nick said as he inserted the key card in the door. "I mean, Kevin gets pissed, and he yells, but he's just not that physical." The door swung open, and they rushed in through the short hallway towards the bedroom area. In the doorway they both stopped, open mouthed, and then turned and ran. In the hallway, Nick flung the keycard away like it was poisonous. "I did not just see that. I could have lived my whole life without seeing that. Kevin would never, I mean never. What about his wife?" Justin was trying to scrub the sight out of his own mind, thank you very much, and was frantically replaying the fight in his mind, trying to figure out how that could be the end result. Lance against the wall, arm behind his back, Kevin slapped his face. Then nothing Justin could clearly remember until the blow to his head and the shout. The shout. Justin laughed. "What the hell is so funny, Timberlake?" "Didn't you hear what Kevin said right before you tossed him in the room?" "Something about Backstreet Boys on top, right?" "More like 'Backstreet Boys never bottom,'" Justin laughed. "Looks like he was wrong."
How could I not!? It has just the right ingredients: drama, angst, sexual tension, violence, clueless but brave kids, a compromising situation, and a great ending :-)
