JC smoked the cigarette to the filter, letting the acrid burning smoke fill his lungs before tossing the still burning end into the now cold coffee in his paper cup. He glanced around the back alley and rolled his neck wincing as the muscles protested.
Two hours, and twenty minutes left.
Brushing his hands off on his apron, he headed back inside. His allotted fifteen was almost up and he wanted to get back to his station. He grimaced, that was a lie. He wanted to have a few minutes free to stare at Mr. Double Shot of Espresso with Hot Chocolate Chaser.
“You’re gonna have to get that mop cut soon, man.” Joey said pushing over his half eaten scone toward JC.
JC smiled as Joey tugged on a curl. “Nah, all the boys like it. See you’re pulling on it.”
Joey laughed and nodded to Mr. Double Shot. “That boy would probably like to have a pull.” He said with a suggestive wiggle of his eyebrows. “He probably needs a refill.” Nudge, nudge, wink and yes wink.
JC stuck his tongue out at Joey and was relieved when Joey went off to refill the cups of some of the regulars down at the other end of the shop.
Mr. Double Shot raised his arms in a stretch revealing a tempting slash of skin before bringing them down again.
Knocking over his cup, with the remains of his coffee all over the floor.
JC walked over to the mess, towel in hand and watched half amused as Mr. Double Shot tried to mop up the mess with a handful of napkins. “Uh, I can take care of that.”
Mr. Double Shot looked up, and JC had to remind himself to breathe. Green, insanely yellow green eyes. Like a cat.
Except cats didn’t blush till their cheeks and the tips of their ears were a red pink. “’Sall my fault. I can take care of it.” The slow honey glide of the words made a different kind of heat race up JC’s neck.
“Hey, no. I mean, I work here.” Now it was JC’s turn to flush. Of course he worked here, as if the apron wouldn’t give it away. He bent down pushing the towel into the small lake of coffee.
“I know.” The two words spoken quietly his fingers brushing against JC’s.
JC’s mouth opened and closed, then finally spoke. “I, uh. That is. Wouldyouliketogooutsometime?”
Mr. Double Shot started and pulled his hand away. “Oh, uh…”
JC scrambled to his feet, wet towel slapping brown liquid against his forearm. “I, uh. Sorry. Forget it. I’ll. Yeah.”
A hand reached out to stop JC from bolting back behind the counter. “My name’s Lance.”
JC looked down at the hand wrapped around his wrist. “Uh, JC. I mean. That’s me. JC.”
Lance glanced down at his fingers wrapped around JC’s wrist. “Yes.”
“What?”
“I’d like to go out some time.” Lance said with a smile.
JC looked surprised and then smiled. “Yeah?”
“Yeah, we could go out for a cup of coffee or something.”
JC laughed and nodded. “I’d like that.”
Lance let go of JC’s wrist and smiled. “So would I.”
