Since they were together almost constantly there wasn't much that the guys didn't know about each other. They liked to think they had small secrets of their very own. For instance Joey knew that JC kept two extra tubes of toothpaste wrapped in his extra pillowcase so he wouldn’t run out. Tubes that he would never tell anyone about just in case someone decided it would be a good idea to put toothpaste mustaches on him or any other one they decided should be prey.

Justin knew that when Joey was homesick he hoarded all the chocolate chip cookies Kelly sent him and replace them with slice and bake. He didn’t fault him that. Justin, himself, hid the Hershey’s kisses his mom sent in care packages. Telling the others that he was too old to get that kind of thing from his mom anymore.

JC knew that the way to cheer any of the others up no matter what was wrong was to go sit beside them with his notebook and pen. They’d resist at first, try to ignore him. But as he settled more into them and got absorbed in his writing they’d lean in too and rest their head against his or on his shoulder. Everyone else knew that was JC’s way of feeling better too.

Chris knew everyone’s weaknesses and as the oldest felt that it was his duty to exploit them as thoroughly as he protected them. He hid his own experiences from them all unless they would teach any of them a valuable life lesson. It wasn’t that he was keeping secrets really. Just that there were better things to be told.

Lance didn’t have secrets. His face was too readable. His heart too easily crushed by criticism. His hopes and dreams too eager to be explained earnestly. His eagerness drew eye rolls from the older of the group and willing participation of the younger. He was a part of them as surely as he’d been there from the first.

Like a lot of other things this diminished over time, the boyish need to share. There were things that were better kept to himself so he could better savor them. Such as the time, midway through the second tour when he’d read a valentines day card. He had looked up and into dark brown eyes staring intently across the room. Saw the faint tinge of red appear beneath them. Lance had smiled a secret smile and received one in return as he tucked the card carefully away for later.

When he could answer that questioning look.

I love those secrets but especially love the one at the end. Valentine cards, I so like the idea of that :)

LOL. Thanks. It was a good spot wasn't it? That last paragraph was the hardest to write for some reason.

Oh, I love it. Short, but filled with a whole universe of people acting and reacting together. And so sweet!
