He could hear the laughter as he entered the house through the garage. The childish voice yelling out "no bath!" as it giggled merrily, along with the older female voice calling out "come back here!" He barely had time to set the bags he was carrying down on the floor before the little hyperactive bundle of energy otherwise known as his son, streaked into the room trying to avoid the pursuit of it's mother.
Stark naked with his sandy blonde curls bouncing on his little head as he ran, Christopher Scott Timberlake, age 4 1/2 was certain that he'd gotten away from his mommy. He knew if he could just get far enough ahead of her he could escape outside via the doggy door and then he wouldn't have to take the dreaded bath she was trying to inflict upon him. Mommy couldn't run real fast after him right now, she was always tired anymore, he'd realized that not long after Daddy told him that he was going to have another baby brother or maybe a sister this time. Topher wasn't sure he wanted a sister. He never even noticed Daddy standing in the mudroom until Daddy snatched him up in his arms.

He never even noticed Daddy standing in the mudroom until Daddy snatched him up in his arms.

“I’ve caught him, Fidget.” Justin called out to his wife as he held onto his squirming son.
“Noooooooooooooooooo.” ‘Topher howled, “Daddy, put me down. Mommy get me. No bath!”
Justin couldn’t help but chuckle as his son pouted. Christopher looked so much like Justin had when he was the same age, Justin’s Mother pointed that fact every chance she got. He swung the child up in the air once more, letting him go once and then catching him again, “I gotcha buddy.” He reassured the child when he squealed. “Now, lets go find your Momma.”
“No.” ‘Topher insisted. “Momma make me take a bath.”
Justin rested the boy on his hip and looked him over. “What’s wrong with baths, it’ll get you clean and I know you like the bubbles and playing with your boats that Uncle Lance got you.”
“Momma says she’s tired and was trying to make me take a bath with *them.*” The child said with a whine.
Now Justin realized what the problem was, “How about if I let you have your bath in the big tub in your Momma and my room?”
Topher studied his Daddy’s face for a few moments, trying to see if it was a trick, but decided that his Daddy wouldn’t lie to him. “Ok,” he agreed. “I bath in the big tub, you can play boats with me, right Daddy?”
“Sure, let’s go tell your mom first.”
***
Justin found Fidget kneeling next to the tub in the kid’s bathroom, “Hey sweetie,” he called out to her from the doorway, “I caught your escapee in the kitchen.”
“I heard you when you yelled that.” She answered. “I was half way down the steps with these three when you yelled, so I just came back up here with them.
Justin moved into the room and bent down to kiss his wife on the top of her head. He sniffed her hair, it smelled like pears. “Mmmm, you know I love the smell of that shampoo.” He said, nuzzling his face into her curls.
“Later, Jup, remind me of that later. For now, add that escapee to this wet bunch of monster we call our children so I can get them bathed and get out of this bathroom.”
“No can do, baby, I promised him that he could take his bath in our bathroom and he’s getting his boats that Lance sent him right now.”
“Justin, that tub’s too big for just him and right now I don’t have the energy to do the girls in here and him in there.”
“I’ll give Topher his bath and if you’ll feel better, I’ll even get in there with him.”
Fidget looked up to her husband and he swore he saw relief on her face. He bent down and pressed his lips to hers. “Promise you’ll be careful and not drown our son?” She asked with a smirk on her face.
“Promise that when you are done with the girls, you’ll be careful getting up from the floor?” He retorted back.
“Yes Justin,” she rolled her eyes, “You act like I’m helpless or have never been pregnant before.”
“You aren’t helpless, I know that, but still I worry.”
“That’s because you are…” She never got to finish as simultaneously the girls began to fuss and Topher entered the room to drag his Daddy away to the other bathroom.
Topher hadn’t even blinked when his Daddy had climbed into the big bathtub with him, not even when he noticed that Daddy had kept on his underwear. “Grown-ups sure are funny.” He thought to himself as he pushed his boat through a mountain of bubbles and pretended it was attacking Daddy’s knee. He wondered if somehow he couldn’t get Daddy to give him all his baths from now on, it was much more fun than Momma doing it, besides Daddy let him have an extra washcloth and seemed to understand that Topher needed the extra one to keep his face dry while Daddy washed and rinsed his hair. Topher didn’t like the feel of water running over his face and eyes. It was kinda creepy and made him feel like he couldn’t breathe right.
He could hear his mother and sisters talking down the hallway or rather he could hear his mother fussing at his sister as she tried to get them dressed again. He let go of his boat for a moment and looked up to his Daddy.
***
Justin had been leaning back against the tub, content to watch his son playing with his boats and listening to the sounds of his wife and daughters from down the hall. He wondered if Fidget or his mother noticed that Topher almost constantly hummed when he was playing by himself or rather he wondered if they noticed that the boy was humming little tunes and not just nonsense notes jumbled together.
It was the fact that the humming had stopped that made him look up to see Topher looking at him quizzically. “What’s up little man?” He asked.
“Daddy, is the new baby gonna be another girl?” Topher asked.
“I don’t know. Momma and I want to be surprised. Why?”
“I’d like a brother this time.”
“You don’t like the girls?”
“Kay is mean. Jubie won’t do nothing but play with her bear and that’s boring and Rose won’t do nothing unless Kay does it first.”
Justin reached out and pulled his son through the water towards him until he had the wet, slippery child in his arms. “If Kay is being mean, you need to tell me and your Momma about it. But maybe I can see if you can have some extra play dates over at Uncle Joey’s with Anthony and Phillip? You like them, right?”
Topher nodded his head rapidly, water droplets flinging out of his curls. “Yes, they aren’t girls and Anthony has really cool trains and when Aunt Kelly is watching Phillip, she lets him bring his trucks over and he and Anthony crash the trains into the trucks and do you think that they’d like my boats I got from Uncle Lance and …” Topher stopped to take a breath before he continued, “Uncle Joey made Anthony a fort in their back yard, it’s so cool.”
“I’ll call Uncle Joey after dinner tonight, how’s that sound?”
“You’re the bestest Daddy in the world!” Topher exclaimed, wrapping his arms around his Daddy’s neck and hugging him.
“I try.”
***
That night as Justin slid into bed beside Fidget after he’d gotten up in the middle of the night to check on the kids once more before he’d finally go to sleep, he couldn’t help but say a little prayer of thanks to the powers that be for his family. He spooned up behind his wife and smiled as he could scent of her pear shampoo again. Damn he loved that scent on her. Wrapping his arms about her to rest his hands on her swollen stomach where he could fell the tiny fluttery kicks of their unborn child within her, he kissed her behind the ear once and closed his eyes. He had a good life, four great kids, a wonderful wife and one more child on the way.
