Topher hadn’t even blinked when his Daddy had climbed into the big bathtub with him, not even when he noticed that Daddy had kept on his underwear. “Grown-ups sure are funny.” He thought to himself as he pushed his boat through a mountain of bubbles and pretended it was attacking Daddy’s knee. He wondered if somehow he couldn’t get Daddy to give him all his baths from now on, it was much more fun than Momma doing it, besides Daddy let him have an extra washcloth and seemed to understand that Topher needed the extra one to keep his face dry while Daddy washed and rinsed his hair. Topher didn’t like the feel of water running over his face and eyes. It was kinda creepy and made him feel like he couldn’t breathe right.
He could hear his mother and sisters talking down the hallway or rather he could hear his mother fussing at his sister as she tried to get them dressed again. He let go of his boat for a moment and looked up to his Daddy.

Justin had been leaning back against the tub, content to watch his son playing with his boats and listening to the sounds of his wife and daughters from down the hall. He wondered if Fidget or his mother noticed that Topher almost constantly hummed when he was playing by himself or rather he wondered if they noticed that the boy was humming little tunes and not just nonsense notes jumbled together.
It was the fact that the humming had stopped that made him look up to see Topher looking at him quizzically. “What’s up little man?” He asked.
“Daddy, is the new baby gonna be another girl?” Topher asked.
“I don’t know. Momma and I want to be surprised. Why?”
“I’d like a brother this time.”
“You don’t like the girls?”
“Kay is mean. Jubie won’t do nothing but play with her bear and that’s boring and Rose won’t do nothing unless Kay does it first.”
Justin reached out and pulled his son through the water towards him until he had the wet, slippery child in his arms. “If Kay is being mean, you need to tell me and your Momma about it. But maybe I can see if you can have some extra play dates over at Uncle Joey’s with Anthony and Phillip? You like them, right?”
Topher nodded his head rapidly, water droplets flinging out of his curls. “Yes, they aren’t girls and Anthony has really cool trains and when Aunt Kelly is watching Phillip, she lets him bring his trucks over and he and Anthony crash the trains into the trucks and do you think that they’d like my boats I got from Uncle Lance and …” Topher stopped to take a breath before he continued, “Uncle Joey made Anthony a fort in their back yard, it’s so cool.”
“I’ll call Uncle Joey after dinner tonight, how’s that sound?”
“You’re the bestest Daddy in the world!” Topher exclaimed, wrapping his arms around his Daddy’s neck and hugging him.
“I try.”

That night as Justin slid into bed beside Fidget after he’d gotten up in the middle of the night to check on the kids once more before he’d finally go to sleep, he couldn’t help but say a little prayer of thanks to the powers that be for his family. He spooned up behind his wife and smiled as he could scent of her pear shampoo again. Damn he loved that scent on her. Wrapping his arms about her to rest his hands on her swollen stomach where he could fell the tiny fluttery kicks of their unborn child within her, he kissed her behind the ear once and closed his eyes. He had a good life, four great kids, a wonderful wife and one more child on the way.
